Driver conflict response during supervised automation: Do hands on wheel matter?

چکیده
Securing appropriate driver responses to conflicts is essential in automation that not perfect (because the needed as a fall-back for system limitations and failures). However, this recognized major challenge human factors literature. Moreover, in-depth knowledge lacking regarding mechanisms affecting response process. The first aim of study was investigate how conflict while using highly reliable (but perfect) supervised differ drivers (a) crash or avoid object (b) report high trust low object. second understand influence on two specific factors: hands-on-wheel requirement (with vs. without), type (garbage bag stationary vehicle). Seventy-six participants drove with but 30 min test track. Thereafter they static revealed by lead-vehicle cut-out. assessed through process: timepoints surprise reaction, hands-on-wheel, steering, braking. Crashers generally responded later all actions process compared non-crashers. In fact, some crashers collided without even putting their hands wheel. Driver independent requirement. High-trust than low-trust at all, only crashed. larger vehicle triggered an earlier reaction garbage bag, steering were similar types. To conclude, crashing associated delay addition, does change changes trust-level type. Simply holding wheel sufficient prevent collisions elicit responses. High late crashing, whereas response. A trigger reactions.

Driver assistance for "Keeping Hands on the Wheel and Eyes on the Road"
in two steps: First, we determine basic activities of each upper body part (e.g. Two, one, or no hand is on the steering wheel; Head is looking left, straight, or right). Then these basic activities are combined in a fusion step to extract higher level of semantic description of driver activities (e.g. whether the driver is following the above safety tip or not). Our experimental evaluation wit...
متن کاملImproved Squeaky Wheel Optimisation for Driver Scheduling
This paper presents a technique called Improved Squeaky Wheel Optimisation (ISWO) for driver scheduling problems. It improves the original Squeaky Wheel Optimisation’s (SWO) effectiveness and execution speed by incorporating two additional steps of Selection and Mutation which implement evolution within a single solution. In the ISWO, a cycle of Analysis-SelectionMutation-Prioritization-Constru...
متن کاملTowards Automation Component Based Design Hands-on Training
Automation world is living a change of design methodologies. Old topdown approaches are being replaced by component based design allowing design, realization and exploitation cost gains. Automation training in universities also evolves in order to train future automation industrialists up to date on new design paradigms and technologies. This paper presents three projects ill...
متن کاملHuman Hippocampal Dynamics during Response Conflict
Besides its relevance for declarative memory functions, hippocampal activation has been observed during disambiguation of uncertainty and conflict. Uncertainty and conflict may arise on various levels. On the perceptual level, the hippocampus has been associated with signaling of contextual deviance and disambiguation of similar items (i.e., pattern separation). Furthermore, conflicts can occur...
متن کاملConflict Resolution Automation and Pilot Situation Awareness
This study compared pilot situation awareness across three traffic management concepts that varied traffic separation responsibility between the pilots, air-traffic controllers, and an automation system. In Concept 1, the flight deck was equipped with conflict resolution tools that enable them to perform the tasks of weather avoidance and self-separation from surrounding traffic. In Concept 2, ...
